Steven Zhu Hongsheng (General Manager of International Education Business Department of Hailiang Education Management Group, Principal of Hailiang Foreign Language School): Hailiang Foreign Language School, founded in 1995 by the Hailiang Group, a Global Fortune 500 Company, is also the first school built under Hailiang Education Management Group, which is the first Chinese G1-12 basic education group listed under NASDAQ in the United States (ticker symbol: HLG). Now, Hailiang Foreign Language School has a dual track of bilingual education and international education, an elite school providing 12-years of international education.

Steven Zhu Hongsheng (General Manager of International Education Business Department of Hailiang Education Management Group, Principal of Hailiang Foreign Language School): My educational philosophy has always been “The world is a school, learning is life, education is the future”. In my viewpoint as an educator, school is the most important aspect of the world, and school is the entire world in the eyes of children. This world and society must develop and change simultaneously. Every child is an individual and independent person with the right and freedom to choose his or her own growth path.
The goal of education is all about people. The goal is to cultivate and develop global citizens in the increasingly globalized community. The direction of education is always aimed towards the future: for the futures of the children themselves, the futures of the children’s families, the future of the country, the future of the world, and the future of humanity. Therefore, education should not be categorized as “traditional” or “international”. International education is just a term used to describe the current stage of transformation of educational theories. International schools can be global schools, or schools aimed at future technologies, but not alternative schools that merely seek to do things differently.
Host of School Selection Discussion for Tencent Abroad: How does Hailiang foreign language school build its own exclusive education curriculum system?
Steven朱红胜【海亮教育管理集团国际教育事业部总经理、海亮外国语学校校长】：我们一直致力构建“一生一课表，一人一规划”的教育模型。为了实现学生和家庭的自主升学选择，我们开设了美国高中证书课程、加拿大高中证书课程、澳大利亚高中证书课程、英国中学证书课程，搭建了广阔的与世界名校无缝对接的桥梁。现在我们已经是IB 候选学校，即将全面提供IB 课程体系。
Steven Zhu Hongsheng (General Manager of International Education Business Department of Hailiang Education Management Group, Principal of Hailiang Foreign Language School): We have been committed to building an education model of “one student, one academic plan, one person, one plan for life”. In order to account for the independent choices of students and families, we have set up an American high school certificate course, a Canadian high school certificate course, an Australian Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) high school certificate course and British International AS and & Level senior high school courses, which have collectively built a wide bridge of seamless connections with world famous schools. Now we are a candidate school to become International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, and we plan to provide the comprehensive IB curriculum.
In the process of realizing the concept of “one student, one academic plan”, we make the most of our offerings of specific courses across an array of rich cultural disciplines. We fully provide and complete the Chinese national compulsory education courses. Around the curriculum standard, we maximize the enrichment of specific courses, especially Chinese, mathematics and English, achieving the perfect integration of standards and students’ individual personalities through compulsory and elective courses. We regard bilingual ability and technological ability as one of the basic ability standards for children. At present, the school has opened six foreign language courses, Lego, robotics and other intelligent courses, which are all compulsory for our students.
Children’s growth stage does not just occur in the classroom, their academic courses do not include cultural topics and the time after class is the best time to help children to expand their thinking and cultivate their natural abilities to prepare them mentally and physically for the future challenges in life. As a companion of students’ growth, we encourage children to create their own communities or organizations, and we actively guide students to carry out vibrant campus activities, such as student union, student council, Association Federation, Model United Nations (MUN), CPPCC simulations, Shakespeare drama club, student enterprises, professional clubs and other student organizations and community activities, and more in order to help children prepare for skills and interests needed for their future lives. The school attaches great importance to each student’s life and career planning, so the school lists it as a compulsory course for children. To this end, the authoritative Kuder vocational evaluation system (www.kuder.com) has been introduced in order to tranfer a large number of teachers to carry out professional career guidance training. How is Hailiang Foreign Language School trained to handle these challenges?
Steven Zhu Hongsheng (General Manager of International Education Business Department of Hailiang Education Management Group, Principal of Hailiang Foreign Language School): As a school for cultivating future leaders, we pay great attention to the implementation of nurturing education. Focusing on the idea of “taking Chinese literacy as the benchmark and understanding global rules”, we put forward detailed requirements for teachers and students’ words and deeds: from dining music CDs, walking on the right side of hallways, volume awareness, the cultivation of actively greeting others politely and other behavior habits which help form a uniform aesthetic, such as wearing matching uniforms, environmental decorations, etc. From the subtle action of pushing chairs in when leaving the table to behavioral etiquette such as doing chores without needing reminders, being able to quietly listen and smile when being spoken to, paying attention to hygiene and grooming standards, and more, Hailiang Foreign Langauge School embodies international education in the daily habits and demeanor of its students, inside and outside of the classroom. Hailiang Foreign Language School has also given children the right to supervise and manage the environment and aesthetics of the school, from reminding teachers of etiquette standards, to paying attention to teachers’ office environment, and even issuing ‘tickets’ to teachers who use inappropriate words or do inappropriate deeds, which has become part of the normal culture and environment of Hailiang Foreign Language School. The campus is full of teachers and students who work and act as equals in a harmonious integration of taking responsibility for the school’s environment. On campus. I’m more like a parent than a prinicipal. Every child knows my name is Steven. Every time I walk on campus, I’m like a parent, or sometimes even an older brother. Children are willing to be close to me, share with me and tell me anything that’s on their minds.
Host of School Selection Discussion for Tencent Abroad: More and more attention has been paid to the concept of home schooling and cooperative education. How does Hailiang Foreign Language School build an avenue for communication between school and home?
Steven Zhu Hongsheng (General Manager of International Education Business Department of Hailiang Education Management Group, Principal of Hailiang Foreign Language School): Education reform requires combine parents’ education alongside the students’ education. Only after parents have a correct understanding of education and their role in cooperation with the school, can education problems be fundamentally addressed and changed. The culture advocated by Hailiang Foreign Language School is a “family culture”, and it also strives to build a unique “Parent Cooperation Organization” which is different from the traditional model of communication between schools and families. This organization is comprised of a parents committee, which includes a parents’ committee meeting room, a parent-child classroom, parent volunteer and parent school. Parents become a real part of the school. We require parents to participate in the above school activities at least once a year, so as to integrate the positive interaction between parents, students and schools and form a large education culture.
Host of School Selection Discussion for Tencent Abroad: What innovations does Hailiang Foreign Language School utilize in its daily administrative management?
Steven Zhu Hongsheng (General Manager of International Education Business Department of Hailiang Education Management Group, Principal of Hailiang Foreign Language School): The structure of Hailiang Foreign Language School is totally different from traditional schools. In order to allow every child to have the freedom to pursue his or her own personal dreams and aspirations, we began to dismantle the traditional school architecture and management model, and built a unique academy system in its place. In order to make the education management more refined, we have reformed the management model of the school’s departments, and divided the primary school, junior high school and senior high school into several small “schools” again. The division of departments into smaller academies is not for purposes of administration, but only for education. The primary school’s Forest Academy, Ocean Academy and Sky Academy all work to help children understand nature, society and the world around them. Junior high school’s Alpha, Lion, Conquest, and Talent Academies guide children to explore the mysteries of the unknown. American and Canadian Academy, Australian Academy, British Academy and future academies of the International College allow children to define a clear life plan, enter the world with a more stable outlook and move towards the future at a robust pace. All children understand the concept of this “academy” system, without the traditional concepts of grades and classes, so that learning and life are more open and free.
We also attach great importance to music, art, sports, science and technology, foreign language and mental health, which are kept completely independent from the traditional school curriculum management system. We have established six independent colleges, namely, the Academy of Music, the Academy of Fine Arts, the Academy of Sports, the Academy of Science and Technology, the Academy of Foreign Languages and the Growth Education Center, which are collectively referred to as “One Center—Five Colleges”. Under the direct leadership of the principal’s office, each college has independent curriculum construction rights and full autonomy in their evaluation of teachers and students. Each academy acts as an independent evaluation unit, which fully stimulates the innovation and enthusiasm of each discipline.
In order to assist teachers in their professional development, we have reformed the traditional educational administration system, established a Teacher’s Academy, systematically designed the training and growth system for teachers and student leaders, and provided more accurate growth planning and professional help for both teachers and management personnel.
At present, we are setting up a Business Academy and an Academy of Natural Sciences by using the campus space and by working with professional institutions outside the school to provide children with courses such as professional financial management, social operations, agriculture and handcrafts, in order to help our students position themselves for the future life. In the future, we will set up more professional academies to provide more professional education for children according to the current developments in the world, the progression of society, and the needs of families and children.

Steven Zhu Hongsheng (General Manager of International Education Business Department of Hailiang Education Management Group, Principal of Hailiang Foreign Language School): “Education is trending because it is part of our society; education is great because education is a part of life; education is sacred because it is part of our future.” This was my education speech for teachers on Teachers’ Day 2018. For educators, our era is the best one. There are infinite possibilities waiting for us to explore, infinite opportunities waiting for us to overcome, and infinite dreams waiting for us to realize. In my heart, I am always climbing this mountain: let every child have competence for the future, let every child become a free person in the future!
