In 2008, Hailiang Foreign Language School began to enroll primary and secondary students from outside of China. These students are offered classes in learning Mandarin Chinese and subject classes taught in English. International Students at HFLS are trained in order to sit for the HSK (Standardized Mandarin Chinese proficiency test) and the ‘GaoKao’ National College Entrance Examination in China. The Chinese as a Second Language lessons are taught with small class sizes and students are placed into classes based on their Mandarin Chinese proficiency from complete beginner (HSK1) to advanced (HSK6). International students also learn about China through Chinese culture classes, Chinese arts classes, Chinese calligraphy classes and more.

Since the inception of the first international program in 2002, International Teachers have been a vital component in the expansion and the development of the International Education goals of Hailiang Foreign Language School. International Teachers at Hailiang Foreign Language School have collectively taught tens of thousands of Chinese students. For many of them, International Teachers at HFLS have been the only native English-speaking teachers they have met and spoken with. It has been a life-changing experience for both students and teachers.
